Announcing two new half-day DITA workshops – with case studies and more!
Cherryleaf is delighted to announce two special DITA workshops presented by one of the world's leading experts in single sourcing and DITA.
We've managed to persuade Tony Self – CEO of HyperWrite, Chair of the DITA Help standards committee and lecturer at Swinburne University, Melbourne - to make a detour on his way back from his presentation at the tekom conference in Germany, so he can share his expertise and experience with you.
The two workshops are: Getting started with DITA and Implementing DITA.

Implementing DITA – What's actually involved in moving to a DITA authoring workflow?
Afternoon workshop, 10 November 2008, in central London (London Bridge)
This half-day workshop addresses that question by reviewing the types of authoring and publishing tools available and what training is needed. We will also examine the resources that are available, and strategies for building specific skills. The workshop will also cover the basics of semantic, structured authoring with DITA, and the principles of separating content from form. Tony will be presenting two case studies on DITA projects, and worked examples will be used to explain important concepts. Ideally you should have some basic understanding of DITA, or have attended the earlier "Getting Started with DITA" workshop.
You Will Learn:
- How to analyse a document's structure and topic types.
- How to plan and model a document.
- How to identify information types in legacy documents.
- The logic and importance of semantic mark-up.
- How to author DITA content.
Price - £55 (ex VAT) per delegate.

About the presenter
Tony Self has worked as a technical communicator for almost 30 years, with the last 20 of those years specifically in the areas of online help systems, computer-based training, and electronic documents. He's also a very experienced presenter and trainer. In 2008, he's been asked to speak about DITA at the UA conference Europe 2008, The Australasian Online Documentation and Content Conference, WritersUA conference and the tekom conference in Germany.
In 1993, Tony founded HyperWrite, a hypertext and technical documentation company based in Melbourne, Australia. The majority of his work involves providing online and Internet strategy advice, innovative solutions and specialised training for customers in Australia and other parts of the world.
Tony also lectures in the Technical Communication program at Swinburne University in Melbourne, and holds a Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning and a Graduate Diploma in Technical Communication. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Scientific and Technical Communicators (UK), a member of the OASIS DITA Technical Committee, and an enthusiastic promoter of structured authoring approaches.
So what's DITA?
DITA is an open source, XML-based architecture, standard and methodology for creating, defining, authoring and storing technical information, including user manuals, Help systems, support information and other forms of documentation and training materials. Larger organisations increasingly prefer DITA to proprietary document storage formats, as DITA offers significant efficiency and usability advantages. But DITA is not limited to large organisations; it makes good sense for projects of any size to be moved to the DITA architecture
