The company develops software used by accountants and taxation specialists, and they are looking for someone to assist in developing the user assistance they create for their range of software. You need to have at least 3 years relevant technical authoring experience. You also need to have experience of using a Help Authoring Tool - ideally experience of MadCap Flare, XHTML and XML transforms.

The client is in the Electronic System Level sector, developing signal processing algorithms and solutions that accelerate MATLAB execution and synthesize C from MATLAB. You need to have experience of documenting similar software and services and be able to work on site.

This IT company is looking to recruit an experienced Technical Author. It's a full-time technical writer, working in a cross-function role that will benefit all of their IT departments.

Jubail is a city in the Eastern province on the Persian Gulf coast of Saudi Arabia, with a population of 250,000. In 1975, it was designated as a new industrial city by the Saudi government, and has seen rapid expansion since then. The industrial city is a complex of petrochemical plants, an iron works and a number of smaller companies, plus a Royal Saudi naval base.
You will work collaboratively to create a wide full range of documents, mostly for users of IT systems in the Healthcare sector. These include online Help user manuals, technical manuals, specifications, process and procedure manuals, training, business papers and reports.
You should have strong analysis and problem solving skills and be able to communicate well and work as part of the existing IT team. You need to have 5 years' IT technical writing experience, be a graduate, be a native English speaker and be able to write English for an international audience. You also need to be someone who can work across various IT functions to produce the documentation needed by the organisation and its users. Ideally, you will also have experience of working in an environment where documents are translated into different languages.
Salary is negotiable, depending on qualification and experience. The duration will be one year (but renewable). They won't determine the salary until an interview has been conducted and a candidate has been selected. They evaluate the salary based on qualification and experience, plus your current package.
#3073 Contract Technical Author/Procedures Writer, 3-6 months, £25-£28/hour, Brighton
Our client is looking for a technical author who can develop a business process manual for them, which will be delivered on paper and online. This manual will explain the business processes to both internal staff and to a partner company based in the USA.
You need to be able to work independently, at their offices in Brighton. You also need to have previous experience of documenting business procedures, ideally in the insurance or financial sector. You also need to be able to start in the next four weeks.
#3072 Contract Technical Author, 3-5 months, £28-£36/hour, Hemel Hempstead
A client requires a contract technical author to document a new medical scanning device it is developing. The product is likely to be launched towards the end of the year but they have reached the stage where they would like an author to start work as soon as possible, although they are prepared to wait a short period if the right person needs to finish another job.
You will be working with the client's full time technical author, and you will get a high level of support to ensure the job is done on time to a level of quality expected by their client. There is also a Technical Illustrator available for drawings and views supplied by a CAD system.
The contract is for 3 months with an option to extend to 5 months. Hours are 37 per week, with some flexibility both sides of the weekend for travel if you live some distance away. The rate is dependent on skills and experience.
Your main area of experience should be in documenting hardware. You need to have least 4 years experience in producing service guides and operating manuals for machinery that had some elements of diagnostic software. You will also need to understand how to work in an R&D environment. The skills required are, in order of importance, the ability to: use unstructured FrameMaker 7.2 (you need to be able to create a book stylesheets); use basic Excel; edit and retouch vector diagrams and photo images in Illustrator and Photoshop CS.
Ideally, you will also have some knowledge of the medical industry, their regulations and equipment (although this is not a specific requirement).

A large multinational technology organisation wants to recruit more technical authors to work in its documentation group. Business has expanded dramatically and they need to employ new staff. It isn't easy to find suitable new personnel locally, so they recruit technical authors from the UK and other countries.

If you search YouTube for Kongsberg, you'll get a sense of what the city is like - countryside, clubbing, basketball, jazz festivals and, of course, skiing. You'll be working a state of the art building, with excellent downhill skiing runs and a golf course within 10 minutes of the office. Norway is amongst the wealthiest countries in the world, with a fully developed welfare system. It has also been consistently ranked No 1 in the world in human development since 2001.
The company delivers high-technology systems for the oil and gas, merchant marine, and defence and aerospace industries - systems that automatically maintain a ship's position and heading, allowing operations at sea where mooring or anchoring isn't possible.
They supply process control systems where they supply both the hardware and the software, so they need to provide information for installation, operation and maintenance. The documentation team produces documentation as both printed and online information.
You need to be either a technical author with previous experience working with engineering documents or an engineer with previous experience working with technical documentation. They would prefer someone with some electronics background as well as systems and software.
You also need to have fluent written and spoken English. Ideally, you will have experience of XML (DocBook, DITA); writing marketing, installation, operations and maintenance documents; Online Help and embedded Help.
They are essentially looking for permanent staff, but would consider other arrangements for a test period.
#3042, Technical Author/ Junior Technical Author, London, £25K-£31K
This company specialises in data management and reducing fraud and identity theft, and it is looking for a junior technical author or a technical author to join its team. Its software and services help organisations capture accurate contact data and keep it accurate over time. You'll be joining a team of two Technical Authors, within the support team of the Product Development department. You'll be creating product manuals and online Help for their data integrity software.
For a junior technical author position, you need to be of graduate calibre and have a demonstrable interest in and enthusiasm for technical authoring. You should have strong attention to detail and excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
For a technical author role, you should have a basic understanding of the principles of single-sourcing, and ideally some knowledge of using FrameMaker and either RoboHelp or Madcap Flare.
It's part of a larger international company, so it offers the benefits of both a large and a smaller sized company. Our client is looking to build a team of e-learning courseware designers or technical authors capable of developing e-learning courseware. This team will work on a MOD IT finance administration project it has won, with the project likely to run May (or June) 2008 - November (or December) 2008. You'll be developing online courseware that will help UK military personnel to use IT hardware. The work will be mostly carried out in Sheffield, although the client might consider off site working.
You need to have some experience of developing e-learning and other training materials for IT equipment. Ideally, you will have MOD security clearance; have experience of developing technical training to the armed forces; plus experience of documenting Windows Server administration and set-up. The contract will be on a 6 month contract basis, with possible contract extensions. Rate is negotiable, so you'd need to tell us your salary expectations.

A leading developer of information systems for healthcare and is looking to recruit a technical author. The current author has been promoted to a new role with in the business, which has lead to this vacancy.
You'll be responsible for turning technical material into user documentation for their customers. In order to produce the user documentation, you'll work closely with the development, consultancy and testing teams plus other stakeholders. They also like the author to use their expertise elsewhere in the business, providing advise and input to ensure internal technical documentation, training and marketing collateral are consistently good. You need to have a degree (or equivalent) and previous experience in a similar role. While previous experience of producing technical documents for Web-based data and business intelligence systems will be of particular interest, they are primarily looking for someone who has a good attention to detail, is flexible, is able to learn and who thrives on team work.
They will consider someone looking for a part-time role, and there is the opportunity for some home-based work.

You'll be producing technical and customer documentation for its products - user guides, reference manuals, Help files, getting started guides and white papers. You need to be someone who understand complex mobile/wirefree software systems and be able to communicate this information to a technical and marketing audience.
Knowledge of Java is essential. A background in technical writing will be a distinct advantage. You will need to be a graduate, and at least three years relevant experience. The role is in a high profile, rapidly expanding Marketing department, and you need to be the type of person who can get on with people from all levels in the company.
