Over recent months, we’ve been using AI to conduct a monthly survey that tracks hiring demand for Technical Authors across the UK.

In this post, we provide:

- The results for April 2026.
- Graphs showing the trends since we began the indicator in September 2025.

## Overall job volume for April 2026

Summing across the six job boards produces ≈1,271 Technical Writer roles and ≈3,616 Technical Author roles in the UK as of 19 April 2026. These figures yield a combined total of ≈4,887 vacancies, down slightly from ≈5,001 in March.

The market is cooling slightly after a strong Q1. Declines are broad-based across all platforms, suggesting seasonal stabilisation rather than sector-specific issues

These totals are approximate and probably include some cross‑posted jobs, but they give a good sense of the trend.

## Open vacancies by job board

| Job board | Role counted | April 2026 vacancies (snapshot mid‑April) | Change v March 2026 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Totaljobs | Technical Writer/Author | 331 jobs across the UK. | ▲ 23 from 308 jobs in March. |
| Jobsite | Technical Writer/Author | 301 jobs. | ▲ 21 from 280 jobs in March. |

| Adzuna | Technical Writer | 137 jobs across the UK. | ▲48 from 89 jobs in March. |
| | Technical Author | 2291 jobs. | ▼ 64 from 2355 jobs in March. |

| | Technical Author contract jobs | 50 contract vacancies | ▼ 4 from 54 contract author jobs in March. |

We use an AI tool to retrieve the data from the jobs boards. This month, it also reported on Indeed and LinkedIn:

| Job board | Role counted | April 2026 vacancies (snapshot mid‑April) | Change v March 2026 |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| LinkedIn | Technical Writer/Author | ~700 | ▼ -8% to -10% |
| Indeed | Technical Writer/Author | ~600 – 750 | ▼ -5% to -8% |

## 8 month trend graphs

We have created some graphs to look at the trends since we began the indicator in September 2025. The combined totals are dominated by Adzuna’s broad “technical author” category, which includes many engineering and defence documentation roles. For that reason, we have excluded Adzuna from these graphs.

This is very interesting, thank you. With regard to LinkedIn, when I was job hunting three months back for freelance Test Manager work, at least half the roles were AI projects asking for freelance people to train their AI. In other words, not real jobs in any way shape or form. Does your methodology exclude those types of role?

The search is only on roles classified as Technical Author. That includes job titles such as Technical Writer and Documentation Manager.
