UK Technical Writer and Technical Author Jobs Trends – October 2026

UK demand for Technical Writers and Technical Authors has softened slightly in October 2026, according to our latest monthly jobs survey.

Our October survey suggests a 3.4% decline in advertised vacancies across comparable LinkedIn and Reed searches, compared with September.

While this points towards a modest slowdown in recruitment, the contract market remains relatively stable, with a small increase in Technical Author contract advertisements.

Our provisional estimate puts the UK market at approximately 4,050–4,250 vacancies, although this figure should be treated as an indicative measure rather than a verified count of unique positions.

October 2026 job vacancy results

Our latest survey examines UK vacancies advertised for Technical Writers, Technical Authors and closely related roles.

The most reliable month-on-month comparisons come from LinkedIn and Reed.

Job board September 2026 October 2026 Change
LinkedIn (Technical Writer) 720 710 −10
LinkedIn (Technical Author) 267 257 −10
Reed (Technical Writer) 99 95 −4
Reed (Technical Author) 126 109 −17
Total search results 1,212 1,171 −3.4%

These figures show a relatively small reduction in advertised vacancies.

These are job-search result counts, not necessarily unique vacancies. Some positions may appear under both Technical Writer and Technical Author searches or across multiple recruitment platforms.

Nevertheless, comparing the same searches each month provides a useful indication of changing recruitment activity.

LinkedIn remains relatively stable

LinkedIn continues to be an important recruitment platform for Technical Writers and Technical Authors.

In September, our LinkedIn searches returned 720 Technical Writer and 267 Technical Author positions.

In October, those figures decreased to 710 and 257 respectively.

That’s a combined reduction of approximately 2%.

Although this represents a decline, it suggests that recruitment activity on LinkedIn remains relatively resilient.

It might also indicate that employers continue to favour LinkedIn for recruiting technical communication specialists, particularly for software, technology and documentation roles.

Reed shows a more noticeable decline

The decline on Reed is more pronounced.

Technical Writer search results decreased from 99 in September to 95 in October.

Technical Author results fell from 126 to 109.

Taken together, this represents a 9.3% reduction in search results.

This is a more significant change than the movement on LinkedIn.

However, differences between recruitment platforms mean we should be cautious about drawing conclusions from a single source.

The decline could reflect changes in recruitment activity, advertising preferences or the types of vacancies being advertised.

What about the other job boards?

We also examined other recruitment platforms.

  • Glassdoor returned 284 Technical Writer and 526 Technical Author search results.
  • CV-Library’s indexed results suggested approximately 156 Technical Writer and 173 Technical Author positions, although these figures could not be fully verified against live search pages.
  • Indeed continues to advertise relevant UK vacancies, but its search interface does not currently provide a sufficiently reliable overall count for our survey.

We have also continued to avoid double-counting vacancies across the Stepstone recruitment network.

Totaljobs, Jobsite and CWJobs can advertise the same positions. Adding their headline figures together could therefore exaggerate the number of available jobs.

For this reason, we haven’t combined figures from these sites.

There is still some duplication between independent recruitment platforms, so our overall estimate should be interpreted as a market-demand indicator rather than an exact count of unique vacancies.

Contract demand remains relatively stable

There is slightly more encouraging news from the contract market.

According to ITJobsWatch, the number of contract advertisements mentioning Technical Writer and Technical Author roles over the preceding six months has changed as follows:

Contract role September 2026 October 2026 Change
Technical Writer 34 33 −1
Technical Author 78 81 +3
Total 112 114 +1.8%

The figures suggest that demand for contract Technical Authors has strengthened slightly, while Technical Writer contract advertisements have remained broadly stable.

These figures cover a six-month period rather than vacancies currently open, so they are not included in our overall vacancy estimate.

Nevertheless, they provide a useful additional perspective on recruitment activity.

UK Technical Writer and Technical Author jobs: the longer-term trend

Our recent surveys suggest that demand for technical communication professionals has gradually softened since the summer.

Month Estimated UK vacancy indicator
June 2026 Approximately 4,500
August 2026 4,300–4,500
September 2026 4,200–4,400
October 2026 4,050–4,250 (provisional)

The October estimate is based on applying the change in comparable LinkedIn and Reed search results to September’s estimated market range.

It is therefore an extrapolation, rather than a fresh count of distinct vacancies across all recruitment platforms.

The available evidence points towards a modest decline in recruitment activity, but not a dramatic contraction in the market.

What does this mean for Technical Writers and Technical Authors?

There are several interesting observations from this month’s results.

First, demand appears to be softening rather than collapsing.

Although advertised vacancies have declined, the reduction on LinkedIn is relatively small.

Second, recruitment activity varies considerably between platforms.

Reed shows a more substantial decline than LinkedIn. This highlights the importance of examining several sources rather than relying on one recruitment website.

Third, contract demand remains comparatively resilient.

The small increase in the ITJobsWatch contract indicator suggests that organisations are continuing to recruit technical communication specialists for projects and temporary assignments.

Finally, the figures reinforce the importance of treating recruitment statistics carefully.

Different job boards use different search algorithms, and the same vacancy can appear on multiple platforms.

Our aim is not to produce an artificially precise number of jobs, but to develop a consistent indicator that helps us understand whether demand is increasing or decreasing over time.
