UK Technical Writer and Technical Author Jobs – August 2026

Our August 2026 survey suggests that the UK employment market for Technical Writers and Technical Authors remains broadly stable, although slightly softer than it was in June.

We estimate there are currently around 4,300-4,500 Technical Writer, Technical Author, and closely related vacancies in the UK.

This compares with approximately 4,500 vacancies in June 2026, suggesting a change of between 0% and -4%.

LinkedIn bucks the trend

One of the more interesting findings this month is the strength of LinkedIn.

In June, LinkedIn showed approximately 721 Technical Writer and 214 Technical Author vacancies in the UK, or 935 results in total.

In August, that has increased to 731 Technical Writer and 275 Technical Author results, giving a combined figure of 1,006.

That’s an increase of approximately 7.6% since June.

Traditional job boards have moved in the opposite direction.

Totaljobs has fallen from 215 Technical Writer and 215 Technical Author results in June to 167 and 168 respectively in August.

Reed has also declined, although by considerably less.

Perhaps some of the apparent fall in vacancies on traditional job boards might represent a change in where organisations advertise vacancies, rather than an equivalent fall in underlying demand.

What about Indeed?

Indeed continues to contain a significant number of UK Technical Writer, Technical Author, and related vacancies.

However, its current search interface doesn’t consistently expose a reliable overall result count that the AI system we use can independently verify.

Rather than introduce an artificial estimate into the survey, we’ve confirmed that relevant vacancies are present but haven’t used an unverified Indeed headline number to inflate the overall total.

The contract market

There is also a potentially positive signal in the contract market.

ITJobsWatch’s six-month indicator currently records 32 Technical Writer and 69 Technical Author contract adverts.

In June, the corresponding figures were 23 and 61.

Because this measures vacancies appearing over a six-month period rather than jobs currently open today, we don’t include these numbers in the overall vacancy total.

Nevertheless, the increase suggests that project and contract demand for technical communication skills remains relatively healthy.

Overall trend

The market doesn’t appear to have experienced a significant contraction. Instead, we’re seeing a modest softening on traditional recruitment sites combined with stronger activity on LinkedIn and an improvement in the contract indicator.

Demand for Technical Writers and Technical Authors remains relatively resilient, but the channels employers use to recruit them may be changing.

We’ll use the August methodology as the baseline for future surveys. That should make subsequent month-to-month comparisons more meaningful by reducing the effect of duplicated vacancies across recruitment networks.
